Minneapolis Central City Parallel Tunnel

The City of Minneapolis Public Works Department successfully expanded the Central City Tunnel System by constructing a new storm tunnel to enhance stormwater management in downtown Minneapolis. This critical infrastructure project reduces the risk of tunnel failure, increases stormwater capacity, and ensures long-term reliability for the city’s drainage system. By strategically constructing the tunnel parallel to the existing system, the project minimizes pressure on aging infrastructure and provides additional capacity for future urban development.

As a key partner on this project, Sambatek provided essential support in several areas. We conducted the shaft siting study location report, identifying the best three access points for tunnel construction while minimizing utility impacts. Our team led the full tree inventory and survey for the portal site, developed all surface removal and restoration plans, and served as the CADD lead for the project’s plan sheets. We also finalized traffic control plans, collaborated on drainage junction structure designs, and performed traffic control and SWPPP inspections during construction to ensure compliance and safety.

This project is a major investment in Minneapolis’s infrastructure, improving stormwater resilience and supporting future growth. Sambatek is proud to have played a vital role in ensuring its success through careful planning, design, and on-site support. The Central City Tunnel project is now up for the 2025 ACEC/MN People’s Choice Award—vote today until 5:30 PM to support this impactful project!
